Roatán is located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja and is the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands. The Bay Islands was formerly known as Ruatan and Rattan and is just north of the Caribbean coast of Honduras. It is approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) long, and less than 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) wide at its widest point.
Roatan consist of small towns and fishing villages built along the waters edge. Snorkeling and diving is at its best here. There are beautiful palm-fringed beaches and miles of off-shore coral reef inhabited by brilliantly colored fish and multicolored gardens of aquatic plants. The earliest Indian inhabitants are thought to have traded with the Maya of Yucatan.
