13n Imperial Jewels of China Cruisetour –
Viking River Cruise & land trip from Beijing to Shanghai 6/15/10
Thank you for the chocolates. It was an unexpected, wonderful surprise. Yes, we had a wonderful time -had virtually no jet lag in China. But when we got home we experienced a long adjustment. I have a shift at the Red Cross on Mondays and last night, almost a week after we got back, I was nodding off. So, I really haven't poked my head out much and that is why I haven't written you.
It WAS a trip of a lifetime. It would take a day to describe all the wonderful experiences. I have only two negative comments. The food wasn't as good as I expected. The Chinese food we had was westernized. Not that I want to eat live squid. They seemed to cater to our customized tastes. I was expecting some different spices so I had very little that I hadn't had before. I loved the hotel breakfast buffets. Had aloe compote for the first time. And I loved the congee that I could add all kinds of new condiments to. My other comment deals with the crowds. I was severely disappointed in the World Expo.
Viking gave virtually no support, except to drop us off. And to tell us to get advance reservations when we entered to avoid the 4-6 hour queues for the popular pavilions. They failed to tell us that the tickets go fast and by 9:30 when we arrived they were all gone. I saw an escorted german travel group that got VIP scheduling--they slipped them in the back door to avoid the queue. For $599 a day, I think Viking could have given us more support. We just went the first day--the full, long day until the bus picked us up. But it was another slice of Chinese life. Saw very little visitors. The government is talking up the Expo to the Chinese people. We had a blast the second day. We preferred to spend the day by ourselves, although Viking so thoughtfully kept the group together from beginning to end. That way it was like a little family. So, the second day we used the subway to get around. And we really enjoyed observing the Chinese people. Not just the ones at the tourist attractions. Also, the local guide they assigned to us (in dropping us off and picking us up) was not very informative. I asked her about going to a local market and she told me that the Chinese go to the little stores near the hotel. But in our travels the second day, when we dropped the Expo, we came upon a wonderful market. She could have told us about it.
We met many world travelers and we enjoyed hearing about their experiences. And we met people who have gone on multiple Viking cruises. I think Viking was the way to go for a trip to China, but I can't see using them again, except maybe for Egypt. It is very efficient way to see the maximum number of sites. But I did resent all the money making opportunities for them (glass painting workshop combined with the Houtong visit; the silk carpet workshop, the embroidery factory and others I can't remember just now). These visits were combined with a so so lunch sometimes provided by the facility. Probably members of the group are looking for shopping opportunities, and these stops provide that. And Viking gets a big cut on the cost of the lunch. But I'd much rather be let loose in a local market. I understand that our choices are limited in China. And maybe this was the choice that was available to Viking.
Loved the hotels and food at them. Viking ship food met my expectations but certainly did not exceed them. I had no stomach problems until my first meal on the ship. Bill was the same.
Viking changed their policy to unlimited water, soft drinks and wine at dinner. And they provided unlimited water. So, we didn't have any beverage charges. That was a nice treat.
We were impressed that the ship staff would remember our names. And when Bill was out of commission for 2 days because of stomach problems, they asked about him.
Loved our escort. His English was so good that he sounded like an American. You had to really pay attention to pick up any differences. I liked this because he was so easy to understand. We didn't have to strain to follow him.
If you are going to do an escorted trip, I think Viking would probably be one of the best. My comments probably relate to any tour of its kind. And our travel style is probably towards the independent side.
Thank you for recommending Viking and for giving us so much valuable support.
Bill has his next knee replacement probably this summer. So, we're not looking to travel again for awhile. I'm interested in the silk road. And we're talking about Turkey. I would not want to do a tour though. Maybe next spring.
Thanks again.

Dear Sally.
We are back and I’m already promoting & recommending a cruise. I really want to be the Ambassador of cruises and tell my stressed colleagues about the cruise and have also copied them your business card.
You did something very Special...You took care of us while I was taking care of my hectic work schedule and ensured that we were registered and kept in touch right up to the point when we boarded the ship..... Now I understand the importance of a Cruise Planner....it goes with NCL motto of S.T.Y.L.E.
I’m glad that I booked my cruise through you. One more time, thank you.

Hi, Stu,
We would like to thank you for a wonderful vacation aboard Caribbean Princess! The time was great, and we'd like to make this experience once again. Next destination will be Alaska but before we have to take our families on a cruise to Mediterranean.
We will certainly contact you once we decide to make another cruise.
Thank you for your great help and perfect guidance!

Hi Sally
Thank you so much for your help! We had a wonderful time! Joanne and Moe seemed especially to enjoy the trip :). We got lots of sun and had a chance to walk a bit at each port with Joanne in wheelchair and Moe in his stroller (or giving Carol a workout in her arms!). It worked out well considering.
Ate way too much. Dessert every night! Next time I need a cruise where I don't like any of the food haha! Rick probably doesn't want me around right now because I made him snack too much haha :)
We didn't try bungee but did try the rock climbing. Carol successfully rang the bell at the top :). I got too scared of the height half way up. Arlene made it half way too.
The sun was intense. Carol and Rick came back with killer tans. Moe and I look sunkissed :). Moe's got Rick's coloring so his melatonin kicks in at the thought of sun!
As soon as I can get pix organized I will send you. Mostly Moe. He is so cute and funny! He loves the camera. Hollywood here he comes!
Ready for the next cruise when Moe is :) He will be able to stay in my room next time :) BTW the interior cabin was perfect for rest...quiet dark cozy...wonderful!
Thank you for your help! :)

Just got back early this morning. Alaska was amazing. Lots of pictures. I'll send them along when I get through them all. The trip was awesome. Thanks for booking it for us. Princess was awesome, and made everything very easy. We had a great time. Rained a lot, but it didn't matter to us. Alaska rain is better than New York rain any time!
The glacier calving was awesome too. A crack that sounds like thunder, and then a piece of the glacier falls off into the water. A spectacular sight and a sound you'll never forget. I'm actually watching the video I took as I type. We didn't get to go dog sledding (which I was really looking forward to and actually rebooked it 3 times but each time it got cancelled because of the weather).
We met Jeff King, the 4 time Iditarod Champion! We went to his house, and met him and his puppies, and he gave us a tour of his kennel as well as an overview of what it is like to run in the Iditarod. It was really great...especially because I love dogs.
The train ride was nice, it was more comfortable than I expected. Very well run. Princess really did a very good job of coordinating the luggage and everything. It was cloudy out (9 of the 11 days was cloudy) but it was still beautiful. We got to see a rainbow at the end of the train ride which was a nice ending to a wonderful trip. I'll include that in the pictures as well. I'm hoping to get through all of them by the end of the weekend.
We saw lots of eagles, and some seals, a few caribou, and we saw a moose on the way to the airport. It was just eating on the side of the road. It was HUGE, and not to mention, not very pretty. lol No bears though, we were hoping to see bears.
Tons of shopping! I never knew Alaska was known for its shopping. We stuffed everything into the luggage (just made the 50lbs limit by .2lbs!) and had very heavy carry-ons. But yes, next time I do go (I plan on going back in a few years, so prepare yourself!) I'm going to have to bring a larger carry-on.

We got home late Monday night. We stayed in Orlando a few extra days after the cruise. John was just saying this afternoon that we need to e-mail you to let you know that we had a great trip. We thank you for always getting good prices for us, and additional upgrades.
Please don't send us a check for the shipboard credit that didn’t get onto our account....we're grateful to you. Consider it a gratuity..........
No doubt, you have exceeded our expectations, Sally. This was our first cruise and we all had a "wonderful time!!!" Every moment was very special to all of us and we enjoyed it a lot (just because of you and your professional assistance!)
I will be sending some photos to you, soon. I will also pass on your contact particulars to all our friends and families (of course with lots of good comments and recommendations about your special deals, quality customer service and professionalism.)
Sally, we want to book another cruise!!!! (after our trip to India - 3 months vacation from May 25th till end of August!). If you have any good deals, after September, please spare a minute to send me an email.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, SALLY, FOR ALL YOUR ASSISTANCE TO MAKE OUR VACATION A VERY SPECIAL AND MEMORABLE ONE!

Hi Sally,
We had a wonderful time! The only glitch was that they didn't have us all seated together. We had to talk with the maitre de and sort it all out. After that, all was well. My parent's room was just gorgeous!!! We loved all of the ports of call and the food was great. Thank you for all of the extras! Happy New Year.

Hi Sally,
This was one of the best vacations of my life. The islands, animals, and flora were all beautiful. The quality of the ship, crew, food/beverages and atmosphere were all spectacular. The weather couldn't have been better. And we had ample of opportunities to get right up close to the animals. Thank you so much for finding this cruise, it truly was the experience of a lifetime.

Hi Sally,
I concur with all the previous sentiments. The trip was really a blast! Celebrity was extremely well organized. The schedule was a good balance of activity and rest. They had the passengers needs all taken care of. Everything was all inclusive...and that meant everything including drinks and food on land. The ship quarters were sizeable and the public areas were nicely laid out. Everything was well maintained. The staff went above and beyond. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. Stacey and I even got to practice our Spanish with a very patient crew :-) The Galapagos were beautiful. Everyday you could see something new and learn fun facts. There was no shortage of exotic wildlife to take pictures of. I also think April/ May are the best months. Not only for wildlife, but also the best months for seasickness, as the water is the calmest.

I have been meaning to write to thank you for the excellent quality of service you provided us (our family in particular - especially with all the attempts to accommodate my mother-in-law's needs - including the information related to expediting the process of her passport) in booking our Carnival cruise for the convention. You were fantastic with organizing so many reservations and keeping our whole group on track!

Hi Sally:
Just wanted to Thank You so much for all your work putting our Cruise together for New Year’s. We had a great time. Had a bad day in Cozmel & could not go Snorkeling – very rough seas & winds – everything was canceled but still had a fun day. Thank you again,

Thanks a lot for your help. I can't believe that you still pursued this issue (shipboard credit) even after you got back - that is great and I will remember this more than the $50 :). I will let you know when it shows up in my account.

Hi Sally,
Thank you so much for booking the cruise for Joey and me. We had an absolute blast. The weather was great, the timing was great, the price was right on. :) Also thanks for the wine, we brought it to the performance on the last night to enjoy. Moreover, thank you for signing me up as an Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor member on the last cruise. Thanks to that, we were invited to an 'exclusive event' for loyal members where there was some wining and dining for a select few.
We'll be sure to come to you again for any future cruises. Thanks again.

Dear Sally,
Our cruise was wonderful, and you were quite a hit. We had the best price of all our table mates, and to know the cost of our cruise went down, and you refunded our money pleased everyone. I will be sharing your info with the others, as we are all sharing emails.

Hi Sally,
Well, a big 'thank you' to you for setting up the entire cruise! We did not encounter any difficulty along the way and had a wonderful time. It was quite an experience seeing the five islands (St. Thomas, Dominica, Barbados, St. Lucia, & Antigua). We went ashore and did the tours.
On board the ship was, without any complaint as they thought of almost everything to make it a great experience. The cruise director, Lenny, was fantastic and made it a fun cruise even though we had our 'formal' moments.

Sally!!!!
The cruise was great. Thank you so much. The cake was wonderful. The wine was so thoughtful. The vouchers and coupons came in handy. The ship was really fun. We all had a great time. We are definitely cruise people.
Weather was really good. Snorkeling was ok in Jamaica, but unbelievable in Grand Caymans. We loved the ship, and seeing the ocean every day. Our rooms were very comfortable. Everyone on the ship worked very hard. We could've stayed longer, and we were all a bit sad to have to leave!

We all had a good time. The cruise portion was better than expected. Turkey was the best part of the trip. I will plan on a trip next year with the kids - perhaps to Denmark, Sweden or on a barge down the Seine to Southern France. Thanks again

Dear Sally: We wanted to let you know that we had an absolutely fabulous time on our trip. The Jewel was just beautiful, and the suite was incredible, especially the service and other "perks" associated with being in the suite. We had a separate place for breakfast and lunch, and all of our needs were catered to. We felt extremely pampered. The problem is I don't know how we will ever be able to go back to not being in a suite and having all that pampering.
The excursion in Rome worked out just great. The driver was knowledgeable and there was no traffic at all. He took us to all the major sites, and knew things like when to go so as to avoid the lines--he knew, for example, that the Vatican museum had a 2 hour wait in the morning but was empty in the afternoon, so we went there in the afternoon and walked right in with no trouble. It was great being on our own without a large group. Thanks so much.

Sally,
We just got back. We had a great time and everybody loved it. The dining arrangements were terrific and on Fri, while the adults ate at the Chops Grill, the dining staff took care of the kids in the main dining room. The food at the Chops was ok, they said that they had never before had such a big group. Other than that, the service was great. Thanks for the Specialty Restaurant.

The cruise was good. I especially enjoyed my balcony, so glad that waitlist came through. The beaches were beautiful. Did a lot of reading, ate some really good food, and slept in every day, what could be better? Once again, I appreciate all your help and will certainly recommend you to family and friends.
